Can You Read Tarot for Yourself?

Author: Boris Stromov

There is no ban, but reading your own story is difficult

You can absolutely read tarot for yourself. In my practice there is no rule that the deck must be held by someone else. Nevertheless, interpreting your own situation can be harder than reading for another person.

The difficulty is not punishment for breaking a prohibition; it is emotional involvement. When a reading touches your own feelings, fears, or painful conflicts, detachment is hard. You may want to see a happy ending, justify your past actions, or confirm your worst worries.

The real challenge is seeing yourself from the outside

A person can sincerely interpret the imagery and still fail to notice how emotion influences the conclusion. Assessing our own behaviour critically is particularly difficult: we know what we intended, but we may not see how our actions looked to others.

It helps to write down the question and card positions in advance and leave them unchanged. After drawing, separate three things: what actually happened, what you merely assume, and what the cards led you to consider. This distinction cannot eliminate bias, but it can make the process more thoughtful.

Know when to stop

If you find yourself repeatedly drawing cards about the same person, searching for reassurance, or feeling increasingly distressed with every reading, that is a reason to put the deck away for a while. You do not owe the cards an endless interrogation.

For an emotionally loaded situation, a trusted outside perspective or a direct conversation with the people involved may be more helpful. Reading for yourself is allowed; surrendering your judgement to the reading is not required.
