How to Ask Tarot Questions About the Future

Author: Boris Stromov

“What does the future hold?” has no scale

You can certainly ask about the future, but the fewer boundaries you provide, the broader the interpretation becomes. We live several stories at once: relationships, health, money, family, work, plans and inner experiences. When everything is mixed together, the answer can become generic and difficult to use.

I suggest identifying at least the relevant area and an approximate time period: “How might my career develop by the end of this year?” or “What changes might occur in my personal life over the coming months?”

Explain the direction you want to take

It matters what the person asking hopes to accomplish. If you want to relocate, start a business, repair a relationship, or abandon an old plan, say so. The future cannot be meaningfully discussed apart from the choices you make today.

Sometimes someone tells me they want nothing, are moving toward nothing, and simply want to know what the future will bring. That is a good moment to consider what, specifically, they hope to learn and why. Otherwise the question asks for a description of absolutely everything.

Do not demand calendar-level certainty

Within my practice, tarot is more useful for exploring directions, tendencies, possible obstacles and decision points than for guaranteeing that a particular event will happen on a precise date. Exact predictions can encourage unwarranted certainty.

Treat an interpretation as a potential scenario in light of what is currently known, not as an unavoidable script. You still make decisions and can change course. At times, understanding your own goals matters more than the card that appeared.
